The Michigan Drone Association (MDA) is the evolution of the Michigan Public Safety Drone Association, founded in 2022 and established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2023. Originally focused on supporting public safety drone operations, the organization quickly identified the need for broader statewide engagement, training, and standardization.

In 2023, MDA piloted regional training events across three areas of Michigan. Following overwhelming demand, 2024 marked the launch of the first Winter Conference and a full schedule of seven regional events. In 2025, MDA expanded further with a second Winter Conference and a commitment to hosting 10 public safety-focused regional events statewide.

Recognizing the importance of consistent skill standards, MDA introduced its Operational Readiness program in June 2025; an accredited flight proficiency framework. Agencies can now certify internal proctors to uphold this standard within their organizations.

In response to growing demand across commercial, industrial, and educational sectors, the association is now expanding into the Michigan Drone Association, serving as a statewide trade association uniting all facets of Michigan’s drone ecosystem.
