MDA Sectors: Energy

The energy sector has rapidly embraced drones as essential tools for enhancing safety, efficiency, and insight across operations. From solar fields to substations, drones provide a cost-effective, data-rich alternative to traditional inspection and monitoring methods. Their ability to quickly access hard-to-reach infrastructure, deliver real-time imagery, and detect faults before they escalate is transforming how energy providers manage assets and respond to challenges.

In solar energy, drones streamline everything from thermal inspections to construction progress monitoring. For transmission and distribution lines, they allow teams to inspect thousands of miles of infrastructure without climbing towers or dispatching helicopters. Utilities are leveraging drones for vegetation management, storm response, and preventative maintenance, reducing outages and improving grid reliability. Even in high-risk environments like oil refineries, nuclear facilities, and offshore platforms, drones offer a safer, more efficient way to inspect equipment and maintain compliance without putting workers in harm’s way.

As Michigan continues to lead in clean energy innovation, drones are playing a critical role in supporting wind, solar, and grid modernization projects statewide. The Michigan Drone Association brings together utility operators, energy engineers, service providers, and regulatory partners to help shape standards, share best practices, and ensure this technology continues to evolve alongside our state's energy future
